AI agents in sport: definition, examples and implementation
An AI agent is a program that relies on a language model to carry out a task from start to finish: it understands a request, picks the tools and data it needs, then answers or acts.
In sport, AI agents work for the staff: strength and conditioning, medical monitoring, video analysis, recruitment, logistics, administration. Apelot designs and deploys them in professional clubs, starting with football.
Definition: what is an AI agent?
An AI agent combines four elements: a language model, which understands requests and writes the answers; tools, which give it access to data sources and applications; the organisation's data; and rules, which set what the agent can read and do.
Where an automation script always follows the same steps, the agent chooses its steps according to the request. Where a chatbot answers from what it knows, the agent fetches the information from the organisation's tools.
Chatbot or AI agent: the differences
| Chatbot | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Answers from a script or from what it knows | Picks tools, retrieves data, chains several steps |
| Data | Whatever is provided in the conversation | The organisation's connected sources, according to the user's access rights |
| Output | A written answer | A figure-based answer, a chart, a document or an action |
| Example in sport | “What is chronic load?” | “Which players are above their chronic load this week?” |
Examples of AI agents in sport
Performance agent
Calculates each athlete's acute and chronic load from GPS data, flags deviations from their average and threshold breaches.
Medical agent
Cross-checks load, sleep and wellness questionnaires to alert the medical team, which decides.
Video analysis agent
Uses the clips and tags from video analysis tools to prepare pre- and post-match reports.
Recruitment agent
Searches and compares player profiles from event and tracking data, then writes the reports.
Logistics agent
Plans trips (transport, accommodation, timings) and forecasts equipment based on the fixture list.
Administration agent
Tracks contract expiry dates and sends reminders of regulatory obligations.
What you need to deploy an AI agent
Six elements are brought together during the assessment and the prototype:
- Accessible data sources: platform APIs, exports, internal files.
- An AI model, chosen by the organisation.
- Infrastructure: the organisation's own server or a cloud hosted in Europe.
- Access defined per user and per role.
- A conversation channel: messaging app or web interface.
- A first priority use case, for the prototype.
The limits of AI agents
An AI agent depends on the quality of the data it can access: missing or incorrect data in the source ends up in the answer.
Like any system built on a language model, an agent can make mistakes. Answers must be based on the organisation's data, accuracy is checked during the prototype, and sporting, medical or contractual decisions stay with the people in charge.
Every request uses computing resources: tracking usage per user and setting caps keeps costs under control.
Deploying AI agents with Apelot
Apelot deploys agents in four phases: assessment and audit (1 to 2 weeks), a prototype on one use case (3 to 4 weeks), deployment and integration with your tools (4 to 6 weeks), then ongoing training and support.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an AI agent and generative AI?
Generative AI refers to models that produce text, images or code. An AI agent uses a generative model as its engine, but adds tools and data: it can query sources, calculate and act, not just write.
Can an AI agent replace a strength coach or a video analyst?
No. The agent prepares the information: it gathers the data, calculates the indicators and writes the reports. Interpretation and decisions stay with the staff.
How long does it take to deploy a first AI agent?
With Apelot, the assessment takes 1 to 2 weeks, then a first agent is prototyped in 3 to 4 weeks on one use case, with one or two sources connected.
Which sports tools can an AI agent use?
Data and video platforms (Wyscout, Hudl StatsBomb, Opta, SkillCorner, Metrica Sports), GPS and AMS (Catapult, STATSports, Kitman Labs, Teamworks AMS), management tools (Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Notion, Airtable) and messaging apps.
Where is the data used by the agents hosted?
At Apelot, the organisation chooses: on its own server (on-premise) or in a cloud hosted in Europe, GDPR compliant. Access is defined by role.
